“If you bite and devour one another take heed that you are not consumed by one another.” (Gal.5:5)
We, the officers and the denominational heads of the member churches of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines express grave concern on the efforts in congress to impeach the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. We are concerned that in the current polarized state of the country impeaching the Chief Justice will create animosity more than the national unity it aims to achieve.
While we cannot tell how politics is to be conducted in this country, our social responsibility compels us to speak of the consequences of political actions in so far as the greater and long-term good are concerned. Thus, we support and uphold the separation of powers and the independence between the branches of government characteristic of each other from the beginning. It is not so much our hope that they operate discordantly but rather the three exercise the role of check and balance in a manner that strengthens and renders public service to the utmost. At stake in the current bid to impeach the chief justice are precisely those separations of powers and independence inherent in each. We are concerned too, that the process is sending a signal stifling this check and balance designed to keep governance focused on public service and not on any one political agenda.
Even as we affirm that we pray unceasingly for God’s blessing of wisdom, justice and a sense of accountability for those in the government, we work unceasingly that the democratic process and the dignity of all human beings are upheld at all times. Truly, in the name of public service our appeal is for all of us to choose to serve the Lord and His people. (Joshua 24:15)
