Statement on Charter Change

“If anyone would be first, he must be the last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines reiterates its position on Charter Change: “The NCCP is not against Charter Change. We said this before and we say it again. The fundamental law of the land must always reflect the true aspirations of the people. Therefore, constitutional amendments are necessary in order for the charter to ensure the welfare of the citizens. No doubt, the present constitution is in need of substantial improvement.” (cf. Statement, 16 April 2006)

We view the creation of the Consultative Committee as a positive step. We pray for the Committee especially its chairman, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, (Ret.). We pray that it will work independently and judiciously and that the preservation of human rights and the protection of our sovereignty and patrimony shall be paramount in its deliberations and ultimate proposals.

We invite our constituency to study this concern prayerfully, deliberately and with a sense of responsibility to future generations. Above all we exhort you to be unceasing in prayer that God may so direct the affairs of this nation and that we shall all be humbled that God may “hear our prayer and heal our land.”
