Twenty-two human rights defenders based in Central Luzon participated in the training on evidence gathering and preservation which they can use in documenting cases of human rights violations.
The three-day training which was led by the National Union of People’s Lawyers was held on May 11 to May 13, 2018 in San Fernando, Pampanga.
Prosecutor Maribelle Uminga of the NUPL discussed the basic crime scene operations in human rights related cases. She showed the methods on the conduct of crime scene investigations.
On the second day, Prosecutor Uminga and Atty. Carlos Montemayor, also from NUPL, discussed the importance of forensic sciences in the investigation of human rights related cases.
The workshop required participants to interview victims and witnesses and to manage a mock crime scene.
The last day of training had Atty. Montemayor present the gaps in the Philippine crime scene investigation system and considerations in the search of missing persons.
The participants were also given an input on the updates of human rights situation by Cristina Guevarra of Hustisya.
Atty, Kathy Panguban of NUPL gave a presentation on people’s lawyering, highlighting the difference between people’s lawyering and other legal advocacies.
