NUPL Held Case Conferences on Human Rights Violations

The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, one of the Consortium partners held a series of case conferences during the second half of 2016, discussing the human rights violation cases of every region.

The Mindanao-wide case conference was held on July 23, 2016 in Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center, Davao City. Twenty five (25) delegates from Mindanao region, which includes human rights lawyers, public prosecutor and paralegals attended the said conference. Each region presented two cases – one for violations of civil and political rights and another for violations of economic, social and cultural rights. A total of 10 cases were discussed. A system of monitoring and coordination in handling of cases was also developed for the human rights lawyers and defenders in the region. A post-case conference meeting was also held where the other cases not covered by the actual case conference were discussed.

The Luzon-wide Case Conference, on the other hand was held last September 10, 2016 in Ibay Zion Hotel in Baguio City. Delegates came from Baguio- Benguet, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, Bicol Region, and National Capital Region (NCR), composing of 24 participants. Participants were also human rights lawyers, law students, and paralegals. Like the previous Mindanao-wide case conference, each region presented two cases, one for a violation of civil and political rights and the other for a violation of the economic, social and cultural rights. A total of 15 cases were discussed. A system of monitoring and coordination in the handling of cases was also developed.

The regional conferences were capped by a National Case Conference held on October 14, 2016 in Albay Capitol Conference Hall, Legazpi City. It was attended by 44 delegates from Baguio-Benguet , Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, Bicol Region, and National Capital Region (NCR), Panay Negros, Cebu and Mindanao which includes human rights lawyers, public prosecutors, law students, and paralegals. Each region presented the summary of the regional case conferences for the violation of civil and political rights and others for the violation of the economic, social and cultural rights. The case conference discussed a total of 35 cases. A system of monitoring and coordination in handling of cases was also developed among human rights lawyers and defenders in the region.###
