“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore,
and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1 (ESV)
On the occasion of the 39th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power uprising in the Philippines, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines stands in solidarity with the Filipino people in commemorating the triumph of democracy over tyranny and corruption. This decisive event not only marked the culmination of a struggle against the repressive and dictatorial government of then President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. but also heralded a significant turning point in the country’s history, leading to regime change.
The EDSA uprising stands as an irrefutable historical testament to the immense power that collective action and unity of the people can wield against a corrupt and hated administration. It ignited a fire within the hearts of the oppressed, inspiring them to take action. It also serves as a cautionary tale for those who would rule with tyranny and oppression. This powerful movement has left an indelible mark on the history of the Philippines and even the world, symbolizing the triumph of the people’s will over injustice and authoritarianism.
Over the years, political positions have consistently remained within the same circle of political clans and dynasties. Thus, the substantial change sought by the Filipino people still remains a distant reality. The national budget that was passed by both houses of Congress reeks of “pork”, widespread corruption abounds, human rights abuses persist, and political repression against dissenters remains a pressing issue. The clamor for accountability and justice is a powerful plea that still echoes within the hearts of the Filipino people.
It is crucial to remember that the EDSA People Power uprising was not merely about a change of leadership, but rather a call for social justice and the establishment of a truly democratic society.
The EDSA People Power may have occurred many years ago, but the lessons it instilled remain valuable to this day. If the people reflect upon its spirit and allow the true essence of EDSA to move within their hearts, it may once again compel them to act for the genuine change that is still longed for.
The National Council of Churches in the Philippines urges the Filipino people to not merely celebrate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA uprising, but to wholeheartedly uphold its historic legacy by working for the true essence of democracy and good governance in our country.
The National Council of Churches in the Philippines supports the decision of schools and workplaces to suspend classes and work on the anniversary of EDSA as a means of recognizing the significance of this historical day and honoring the bravery and the sacrifices made by the Filipino people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy.
