Series of disasters continue to affect many parts of the country. Last Tuesday (October 15) a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Region 7 — Central Visayas, particularly the provinces of Bohol and Cebu. The earthquake left massive damage on public/private infrastructure, roads and bridges, centuries-old churches, and triggered landslides.
As of today, the PHIVOLCS has recorded about 1,213 aftershocks, of which 24 were felt in the affected provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.
Based on the Oct 17 report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) , 156 individuals were reported dead; 374, injured; 22 are still missing while 3 individuals were rescued in the Provinces of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor. Local authorities said the death toll could still climb, especially in worst-hit areas in Bohol, where roads and bridges remain impassable.
A total of 631,809 families or 3,209,058 individuals were affected in 1,080 barangays in 3 provinces of Region VII, 9,359 families of which were displaced. 6,511 families stay in 62 evacuation centers while around 2,848 families preferred to live with their relatives. About 2,066 houses were destroyed, 605 totally destroyed and 1,461 partially destroyed both in Bohol and Cebu. Seaports, airports, churches, government/public buildings, hospitals and private establishments were also damaged.

As an ecumenical response to the survivors of the recent earthquake in Central Visayas, the NCCP Operation Paglingap appeals for assistance in cash or in kind.
Badly needed are food, water, sleeping materials, plastic sheets and materials for housing.

We have been following the news reports concerning the 7.2 earthquake that struck central areas of the Philippines on Tuesday and in particular the island of Bohol and neighbouring Cebu. We understand the recorded number of deaths is already in the region of 150 persons. We are deeply sorry to hear this and wish to extend the sincere condolences of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) to the members of your churches and the people of your country.
As you know Taiwan like the Philippines is constantly open to natural disasters and from first-hand experiences we can fully empathize with your people and what they are going through. Please be assured of our concern and prayers especially for the grieving victims at this time.
