Stand for Truth and Accountability: Let the Impeachment Proceed

“Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.” – Luke 12:2, NIV

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) expresses its dismay over the hasty decision of the Senate to archive the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte when, in fact, the ruling of the Supreme Court declaring the impeachment complaint as unconstitutional is still being challenged by members of the House of Representatives, legal experts, and civil society groups.

Despite the Senate’s attempts to portray their actions as mere compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision, it’s clear as day that their decision to archive the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte is motivated by a desire to protect her, rather than a commitment to upholding the truth and the wellbeing of the Filipino people.

While the National Council of Churches in the Philippines acknowledges the authority of the Supreme Court in interpreting the law, it is important to recognize that its decisions are not infallible. Legal experts and prominent figures have pointed out significant errors in the decision, as it appears that the Court may have relied on news reports rather than the official record of the House of Representatives. Additionally, there was a notable absence of oral arguments, which is a common practice in high-stakes and controversial cases.

Thus, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines strongly supports the calls for the Supreme Court to reverse its decision and interpret the law fairly by taking into account past practices and applying relevant experiences and precedents.

The people’s desire for the truth cannot be hidden or archived indefinitely. Sooner or later, those who suppress or conceal the truth will be exposed, as lies cannot be concealed forever. Thus, the NCCP is calling on the Filipino people to remain vigilant in the face of political theatrics and maneuvering surrounding this issue of impeachment. The people should be united in mind and action in amplifying the call for truth, accountability and justice.

As a council of churches, we encourage our membership to open up their churches as a venue of dialogue and collective discernment on vital issues affecting the welfare of the people. We continue to pray and take action to denounce and expose corruption and wickedness in our society.
